Baseball season is under way throughout the state, and region play awaits. For Dunwoody, that means an opportunity to improve upon their first round exit last season.
Senior catcher/outfielder Ian Davis may be able to provide the extra spark that the Wildcats need this season.
“Well, [Davis] is a good leader,” Dunwoody coach Chan English said. “He’s a very strong kid and swings the bat well.”
Against Peachtree Ridge March 5, Davis hit two triples in Dunwoody’s 12-5 win over a Class AAAAA team that should contend for a state playoff berth in one of the state’s toughest regions.
This week, they began a gauntlet run through Region 5-AAA, as they started with a game against Columbia Monday, followed by today’s game against Towers (who defeated Tucker twice last week) and North Atlanta on the road.
Over the course of the season, Davis will both play in the outfield and crouch behind the plate as the team’s backstop, a combination not often seen on the baseball field.
“Oh, he’s definitely fast,” English said. “He actually catches and plays outfield. Usually, catchers are slow and heavy set. He’s a really thick kid, and really quick.”
